A week of soups begins Nov. 11th
Soups are nutritious, comforting, and easy on your digestion. We eat soup almost every single day in my house. Whether it be for lunch, dinner, or even breakfast. Soup is a breakfast in many countries. It makes sense, who wouldn’t want to start their day with a warm bowl of food that will carry you through until lunch.
- Japan they serve Miso for breakfast.
- Vietnam they serve Pho for breakfast.
- China they serve Congee for breakfast.
- Columbia they serve Caldo de Costilla for breakfast.
- Tunisia they serve Lablabi for breakfast.
I am not sure when we in America began having sweets for breakfast but the average breakfast is full of sugar on top of sugar. Cereal, toast with jam, pancakes, waffles, pop tarts, pastries, just to name a few. Sugar leads to an insulin spike and results in a midmorning bonk. Often leading to another cup of coffee or that donut box in the staff lounge or carwash. I am a HUGE believer in fat does not make you fat but sugar does! Sugar not only can lead to weight gain but is toxic and can lead to a flurry of damage and issues from your brain, through your digestive tract, and into each and every cell in your body. A topic for another day! Having soup is a great way to pack in the nutrition and feel satiated in the morning. Don’t think about what is advertised as breakfast as your only options. Food is meant to nourish you and soup is about as nourishing as it gets.
Soup can not only fill you up and warm you up but it is gentle on your digestive tract, hydrates, and is full of valuable nutrition. The base of my soups is almost always made with bone broth. Bone broth, a great flavor base but also full of collagen, vitamins, and minerals. Broth has potassium, magnesium, and sodium which replenishes your electrolytes that is necessary for hydration.
Below are my go-to recipes for meat broth and bone broth.
Here is a great revitalizing VEGETABLE broth.
