Watermelon Slushy

img_0513

Summer is in full swing and temperatures are rising across the country.  There is a heat wave along the west coast.  Watermelon is in season and why not use them for a refreshing treat! You can use fresh watermelon or frozen. I use fresh melon here but froze what we did not use for later use. Mix and match fruits.

You will need:

2 cups cubed watermelon frozen or fresh

1 cup strawberries ( use whatever fruit you have on hand or another cup of watermelon, fresh or frozen)

4 large ice cubes ( my sons like it more juicy than slushy but you can experiment)

1/2 water

*A flavorful and healthful addition could be mint!

Blend on high until all the ice is blended well. I serve over ice to keep it nice and cool. This recipe made three slushies.

Health Facts!

The vibrant red color means watermelon if full of lycopene which is great in helping to fight against cancer and heart disease. Melons are full potasium and vitamin c, may also lower oxidated stress levels and inflammation.

My family has adapted to metal straws ( glass straws and paper straws are also an option). It may not seem like a big deal but it can make a big difference. We can all make a big difference to our environment and to the life of small creatures. Not to mention the plastic used to make straws is not BPA free. Small change, small cost, and big difference.
